Frontier College is a national, non-profit literacy organization that was founded in 1899. We work with children, teens, adults, and families who need help to improve their literacy skills. We work with a variety of partner organizations to deliver volunteer-run, community-based programs across Canada. Frontier College is accredited under the Imagine Canada Standards program.
Description
Frontier College is currently facilitating a 1:1 reading support program at Avondale Elementary School, Mother Teresa Catholic School and St. Clement Catholic School in Grande Prairie. The program’s aim is to improve the reading, comprehension, numeracy and writing skills of children between the ages of 5-13 years with diverse backgrounds, including a significant number of First Nation, Métis and Inuit students. Overall Accountability The Reading Volunteer is a member of the Grande Prairie team and reports to the Community Coordinator for Grande Prairie. Major Duties and Responsibilities Provide 1:1 reading support for at-risk youth at an elementary school in Grande Prairie Participation is 1-2 hours/week Manage student file(s) and track progress Training is provided and on-going support is available from the on-site coordinator

Reading Program Read one-on-one with youth with an aim to improve their reading, comprehension and writing skills Conduct informal reading assessments and evaluations to determine and track learner progress Manage attendance for the program Volunteer Characteristics Possess a love of reading and enjoy reading with children Be at least 16 years of age or older. Additional Assets Knowledge of literacy, community development and early childhood education principles Experience working in a multicultural environment Valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle is preferred
