Position: Kids Help Phone Volunteers - Kids Help Phone
Impact Statement: This fall, we will be launching a texting service trial, to help provide empathetic support to young people via SMS messaging. Right now, we are gearing up to train and recruit Crisis Responders who will answer texts from young people. The volunteer position is remote, meaning that Crisis Responders will be trained and will be able to support young people from anywhere in Canada as long as they have a strong, reliable internet connection! The online training is 36 hours and Crisis Responders are asked to volunteer for 4 hours a week for one year. Although the volunteers are all working from their own homes, they are never alone as they are overseen, in real time, by paid, professional supervisors who are there to support the volunteers in their role.
Description: To provide more detail, Grande Prairie residents can take advantage of this opportunity by taking the next 5 simple steps.
•Step 1: Fill out the online application which should take
approximately 30 minutes
•Step 2: If selected for training, obtain and successfully get a Vulnerable
Sector check (don’t worry, we will provide instructions on how to do
this!)
•Step 3: Complete the 36-hour online training within six weeks
•Step 4: Sign the Crisis Responder Agreement, which includes our code of
conduct and privacy policy
•Step 5: Take their first shift and start changing lives!
Once we review the applications, we’ll contact everyone we think will be a great fit as a Crisis Responder (within 10 days approximately). If an applicant is selected, we will send them the Crisis Responder Agreement and information on background checks and getting started on training.
Training Details: The training will help equip Crisis Responders with the skills for active listening, responding with empathy, evaluating conversations for imminent risk, and safety planning (these are skills that may help with their personal relationships too!). Not only that, but they will be a superhero with a laptop or PC, ready to listen and support young people!

Most importantly, Crisis Responders will never be left alone to support young people. Every shift will be monitored by a professional Supervisor with a background in mental health. Crisis Responders will get to know their Supervisors really well as Supervisors work with them through training, and the Supervisors will be within reach whenever Crisis Responders are answering texts.
Working Conditions: After that, they can train from anywhere where they have a secure, reliable internet connection. In their PJs, at the kitchen table, or in their secret underground lair: whatever works for them!
